Summer 2024 Writing Retreats

June Writing Retreat for Faculty of Color 

For the third summer in a row, we’re offering a Faculty of Color Writing Retreat. The retreat will be June 10,11 & 12 from 10am-1pm in person (Wheatley Hall, sixth floor, room 47) or on Zoom. The goal of the retreat is to give faculty of color at UMass Boston time and space to write in community. We’ll provide some structure and strategies for making the most of your summer writing. Because this is an accountability-based writing retreat, participants will not be exchanging writing. July Writing Retreat for Faculty 

All faculty and staff from all disciplines and ranks are invited to attend our July Writing Retreat. The retreat will be July 8, 9, & 10 from 10am-1pm in person (Wheatley Hall, sixth floor, room 47) or on Zoom. August Writing Retreat for Graduate Students and Faculty 

All faculty and graduate students from all disciplines and ranks are invited to attend our August Writing Retreat for Graduate Students and Faculty. This retreat will take place Aug 20, 21, & 22. If you're a faculty member who writes and publishes with graduate students, we invite you to attend with your graduate students. Individual faculty and graduate students are also encouraged to attend. Each day, we’ll set goals, write in community, and share progress. No writing will be exchanged—rather, we’ll work independently to make progress toward meeting our individual writing priorities. Optional workshops will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday. Accountability Writing Groups for Faculty

The Writing Center organizes writing groups for faculty. These are accountability writing groups, designed to provide UMass Boston staff and faculty members—tenure track, non-tenure track, and post-docs—with time and space to work on their writing in the company of others. We define writing broadly, so writing groups can be used to work on research, data analysis, revision, brainstorming, reading, and any other part of the writing process. We start each writing group with a short goal-setting conversation and wrap up by celebrating our accomplishments. Since these are accountability writing groups, participants don’t exchange writing, instead, we work independently but provide extra accountability and community.

Summer 2024 Faculty and Graduate Student Writing Group: 

This summer, we’re hosting an accountability writing group for graduate students and faculty and staff (tenure-track, non-tenure track, post-docs, and staff) that meets in person and on zoom. We meet on Wednesdays from 10am-1:00pm in various campus locations and on Zoom. The first session is May 29, and the last session will be Aug 21. Coffee and tea will be provided for in-person participants.

Please register to attend. You only need to register once, and you’ll receive an email with more information and the zoom link ahead of the writing group. Participants don’t have to attend every writing group nor stay the whole time. These writing groups are meant to work around your schedule, so come and go as you’re able.  

Fall 2024 Writing Group for Faculty of Color:

The writing group for faculty of color will meet on Mondays from 10:00am-1:00pm. We will meet in-person in McCormack Hall, 3rd floor, room 0721 and on Zoom while classes are in session. Our first writing group is Monday Sep 16 and our last session will be Monday, Dec 9.

If you’re a UMB faculty member, post-doc, or staff member and identify as Black, Brown, Indigenous, or a person of color, please register to attend. You only need to register once, and you’ll receive an email with more information and the zoom link ahead of the writing group. Participants don’t have to attend every writing group nor stay the whole time. These writing groups are meant to work around your schedule, so come and go as you’re able.

This writing group is co-hosted by The Writing Center, the Office for Faculty Development, and the Dean of Faculty. 

Fall 2024 Faculty Writing Group (virtual):

The faculty writing group will meet on Wednesdays from 10:00am-1:00pm on zoom while classes are in session. Our first writing group is Sep 18 and our last session is Dec 11.
