Spirit Week

Camper Teams and Staffing

All campers will be assigned to a team at the start of camp. The team will rotate together throughout the week, forming friendships and building sport skills. Each team will be led by two senior counselors, one counselor, one junior counselor and one volunteer.

Attendance

Camp Shriver is NOT a drop-in program. Campers are expected to attend EVERY DAY of programming, in order to truly benefit from Camp Shriver. Daily attendance is crucial. If your child misses more than 4 days of camp without a doctor's note, they will not be entered in the lottery for the next season.

Transportation

Transportation emails will go out before camp starts in response to the transportation form parents filled out.

The times for pick up and drop off are approximate, depending on traffic and other potential delays. Camp Shriver staff will be at each site to check the kids onto the bus. It is important that campers be at the pick-up sites ON TIME in the morning and that parents are ON TIME in picking them up in the afternoon:

  • Buses will not wait for campers who are late in the morning, and it will be the parent/guardian’s responsibility to transport the camper to Camp Shriver.
  • We will not release campers at the end of the day unless someone is there to meet them, or you have indicated on the transportation form that your child has permission to walk home.
  • If you are late picking up your child three (3) times, your child will be dismissed from Camp Shriver. Campers who are not picked up may be brought back to UMass to wait for a parent/guardian.

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch will be served each day. Campers who wish to bring their own lunch may do so, but no refrigerators or reheating will be available. Please do not send peanut butter or other peanut products. A copy of our menu will be emailed the week before camp begins. This menu is subject to change. Campers are welcome to bring their own breakfast/lunch from home. Camp Shriver also provides a snack between breakfast and lunch for all campers.

Swimming

Camp Shriver campers have the chance to swim at the West Suburban YMCA that is adjacent to the UMass Amherst Mount Ida campus. Campers will participate in swim time with their team and counselors 2 or 3 times each week. Basic swim instruction will be provided by our coach, counselors are in the pool with the campers, and two lifeguards are always on duty.

We encourage campers to pack a swimsuit and towel DAILY. Campers may also want to pack an additional pair of sandals, crocs or water shoes, which can be used walking to and from the pool. (Campers must have sneakers for the rest of the day!).

Medication

EPI-pens and inhalers: If your camper needs an EPI-pen or inhaler, he/she should bring two (2) EPI-pens or inhalers with them to camp. Please make sure they are clearly labeled with the camper’s name and include any instructions from the pharmacy. One will be kept in a central location close to camp activities; the other will be stored with medical staff from Health Services.

Other Medications: If your child needs to take prescription medication during camp hours all medication needs to be delivered by the parents/guardians in the original prescription bottles to the registered nurses at Health Services.

CAMP SHRIVER WILL BE UNABLE TO GIVE ANY CAMPER MEDICATION (excluding EPI-pens and inhalers) UNLESS IT IS DELIVERED BY THE PARENT/GUARDIAN TO HEALTH SERVICES AT UMASS MOUNT IDA.

Opening Day: Monday, July 8, 2024

On the first day of camp, your child will be picked up at one of the designated sites in Boston or Quincy and brought to Camp Shriver at the UMass Amherst Mount Ida Campus, where he/she will join a team. We will spend the first day getting to know each other and showing campers where they will be each day.

What to Wear/Bring to Camp

All campers should come to camp ready to play and have fun! Please wear a t-shirt, gym shorts, and sneakers each day, and bring a water bottle. Campers who come dressed inappropriately (skirts, sandals, Crocs, dresses, jeans, baggy pants, tube tops, t-shirts with inappropriate slogans, etc.) will not be able to continue in our program. It will be helpful if your child’s belongings are labeled clearly with his/her name.

What Not to Bring to Camp

In effort to prevent personal items from being misplaced, as well as injury and/or distraction, Camp Shriver DOES NOT allow personal fidgets or toys from home at Camp. Any personal items found at Camp Shriver will be taken away by counselor and will be returned on their last day of camp. Please note that if your child has a sensory issue and needs a fidget, we will provide fidget options. Please speak to your child about this matter before the start of camp.

Weather

Camp Shriver will run each day on schedule, rain or shine. On rainy days, activities will be moved indoors. Please put on sunscreen before coming to camp. Extra sunscreen will be available during the day.

Safety

Camp staff with first aid certification will provide first aid in the event of an emergency. Staff from UMass Public Safety and Health Services are on duty each day during camp.
