The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives (OVPRSI) seeks to create and maintain a supportive environment for research, creative, and scholarly endeavors. The following internal funding programs are offered by the university:

Administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives (OVPRSI), UMass Boston annually offers the Healey, Public Service, Proposal Development, and Doctoral Dissertation grant competitions. Book Publication Subvention Fund
To assist UMass Boston faculty members who are asked to underwrite the cost of publishing a book through a publication subvention, the provost has established a Book Publication Subvention Fund to be managed by the OVPRSI.
College of Liberal Arts Dean's Fund for Faculty Development
The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Dean’s Fund for Faculty Development provides funds to support faculty research and creative activity through three funds: the travel fund, the research fund and the discretionary fund. The College of Management provides funds to support faculty research, scholarship, and professional activities through through four funds: the Commonwealth Award, the Faculty Scholarship Award, the Dean's Award for Distinguished Research, and the Faculty Fellowship Program. Every year in January, the Office of the President of the University of Massachusetts announces the President’s Initiative Funds. Specifically, these funds are the Science and Technology Initiatives Fund and the Creative Economy Initiatives Fund. The President's office has published the 2009 Request for Proposals (RFP), which are available by clicking on the appropriate link directly below.
In addition, every year in November the Office of the President's Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property Program makes available about $240,000 to the UMass researchers to advance previously disclosed University technologies toward commercialization.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES FUNDS
The Science & Technology (S&T) Initiatives Fund promotes the University of Massachusetts as the Commonwealth’s public research university and ensure that the path to social and economic progress in Massachusetts goes through UMass. The S&T Initiatives Fund also directly supports the UMass Board of Trustees’ strategic priority to strengthen the university system’s research enterprise and grow its portfolio substantially.
CREATIVE ECONOMY INITIATIVES FUNDS
The Creative Economy Initiatives Fund (a fund for the arts, humanities, and social sciences) provides funds for the following typical creative economy research activities or projects.
- the economic development impact of cultural initiatives (museums, theatre, art installations, etc.)
- the social and health impacts on new technologies in communities
- the changing nature of labor markets and their impact on economic development
- projects developing cultural or artistic events that engage communities
- initiatives that promote community engagement and political participation
- an examination of the economic and social impact of changing patterns of migration
TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT FUNDS
These funds are intended to move technologies to the proof of concept stage or to allow the investigator to take other critical steps to make the technology attractive for licensing or other forms of commercialization. Grants uses may include additional experimentation, purchase of equipment, contracting of additional work or services, and some travel.
Annual Research Grant Competition for Undergraduate Students
The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs as wel as the University Honors Program are pleased to call for applications for its Academic Year 2009-2010 Annual Research Grant Competition for Undergraduate Students. These funds assist UMass Boston undergraduate students with expenses that they may incur while conducting research or working on a creative project. The application deadline is November 16, 2009, by 5:00 pm. Only completed applications will be accepted. Grant awards will be announced by mid-December 2009.
