Welcome Chancellor Motley through a new scholarship!
In honor of Chancellor Motley's inauguration, the University of Massachusetts Boston has established the J. Keith Motley Scholarship Program, which will provide current-use scholarship support for students who are alumni of the university's pre-collegiate programs. These programs, which serve more than 2,000 Boston-area students per year, have helped more than 85 percent of their graduates go on to college, as against 53 percent of Boston Public School students as a whole who do so.
As a proud graduate of a university Upward Bound Program, the chancellor represents a rich example of how lives can be transformed through financial aid. It is his greatest wish that all students, no matter what their financial circumstances, be able to benefit from the teaching, research, and public service offerings of UMass Boston.
Two generous donors have issued challenge grants to honor Chancellor Motley as he begins his leadership of our great student-centered, urban public university. State Street Bank and Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Leahy (Mr. Leahy is a 1970 alumnus) have each offered $25,000, for a total of $50,000, to match individual donor contributions on a one-to-one basis. Your funds will contribute to the J. Keith Motley Inaugural Scholarship which will be first offered in fall 2008. The Motley Scholarship, and the donors who have made it possible, will be celebrated at the inauguration.
Donors who make gifts of $1,000 or more will be eligible for membership in the Chancellor's Council, a select group of individuals whose gifts provide a solid foundation of annual support through the UMass Boston Fund.
Your investment at this significant moment, Chancellor J. Keith Motley's inauguration, will be deeply appreciated as the University of Massachusetts Boston continues to realize its tremendous potential to be a powerful agent of social and cultural change.
UMass Boston's pre-collegiate programs help urban students get into college — and succeed once they're there.
