Work-study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is a federally subsidized, need-based, financial aid program determined through Financial Aid Services. With FWS, a student can work in a range of capacities both on and off campus, while earning a money to help pay for their education. Many of the work-study jobs are listed online at www.monstrak.com, a service that UMass Boston students can access from school or home. Here is a sample of current FWS opportunities listed on Monstrak:

  • Library Assistant at the Healey Library: This job requires you to be able to gather, sort & scan barcodes of periodicals and microfilms before shelving; shelve periodicals, microfilms, and reference books; sort & file microfiche; attach barcodes to microfilm boxes and link to catalog records; check in & file USGS maps.
  • Library Assistant at the Museum of Fine Arts: Students perform a variety of duties, including staffing the public reference desk (50-60% of the time) and assisting library staff with research questions and interlibrary loans. Students also perform general library duties such as shelving and pulling books from the stacks for public use. They also assist with special projects for general maintenance.
  • Administrative Assistant in the Biology Department: For this position, duties include typing correspondence, distribution of the mail, posting science related info, daily pick up and delivery of departmental materials and supplies, answering phones and directing calls and xeroxing.
  • WUMB Radio Marketing/Festival Assistant: Work closely with the Marketing Director in organizing, planning and implementing various projects, including fundraising, marketing, sales, special events and publicity for WUMB Radio and the Boston Folk Festival; arrange public appearances for WUMB van and staff van at public appearances; negotiate trades, get paperwork, create and schedule on-air underwriting; help create publicity materials; keep up archives of publicity; answer phones; filing; deliver and post publicity fliers around Boston as needed.
  • S.M.I.L.E. Pre-School Inc. Assistant Teacher: Assist teachers in development and implementation of classroom curriculum and daily schedule; provide safety and structure in the classroom; care for and maintain classroom materials; attend monthly team/staff meetings; ensure student's specific educational, emotional and health needs are met in the classroom; work with group/individual children; continue to develop & grow professionally by attending workshop, courses, etc; other related duties as assigned.
  • Sea Turtle Behavioral Research Assistant: Assist Curator in research project related to green sea turtles; prepare food, set up study elements, break down study elements; clean equipment and apparatus, collect/record data, operate video camera.
