Coordinating Committee
Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Urban Mission Coordinating Committee Web site. This committee is charged with upholding UMass Boston’s urban mission by providing leadership and coordination in areas relevant to our urban mission. The Committee advises the Chancellor on how university-wide programs can be responsive to community needs and explore how community partnerships contribute to the urban mission of UMass Boston. The Division of Athletics, Recreation, Special Events & Programs provides staff support to the Urban Mission Coordinating Committee.
Committee initiatives:
The Urban Mission Coordinating Committee acts as advisory group to the Carnegie Classification on Civic Engagement project. The Committee provides the stewardship required to respond to areas highlighted for improvement in the response to the report as well as the continued excellence of the campus in other areas necessary for retention of this important designation. The UMCC is working in tandem with the External Relations Sub-Committee of the Strategic Planning process to help achieve the goal of making our campus "bigger, better, and more engaged" by researching and preparing a recommendation on a campus-wide structure to support civic engagement. We are sponsoring speaker luncheons, faculty workshops, and will be presenting at the spring Senior Leadership meeting, bringing to campus such notable scholars in civic engagement in higher education as Dr. Ira Harkavy, Center for Community Partnership at the University of Pennsylvania; and Dr. William Platter, former provost of IUPUI and presently a fellow at the Carnegie Foundation. UMass Boston Graduate College of Education faculty member and director of the New England Resource Center for Higher Education John Saltmarsh (formally of Campus Compact) will be addressing the UMCC this spring at an expanded meeting on the topic of Curricular Engagement.
Are you “On the Map”?
If
you connect to the community through your UMass Boston teaching, research,
or service we want to hear from you. In order to promote our Urban Mission
and our HUD, COPC grant, we are launching an initiative to inventory
our community related activities, to create a Community Resource Center
and, to assess efforts in implementing the University's Urban Mission.
As part of this campaign, we will be asking faculty and staff to tell
us where and how they work with communities. The answers will help us
further complete our digital map
of UMass/community connections.
