Memorandum

To:                 The University Community
From:             VC Ellen O’Connor, Vice Chancellor Administration & Finance
Date:              September 22, 2009
Subject:         Flu Summit Promotes a Healthy Campus

As part of the University of Massachusetts Boston’s effort to create a healthy campus community, we are holding a Flu Summit for faculty, staff, and students on Thursday, September 24 from 2-4 pm in the Campus Center ballroom.

What to Expect at the Flu Summit:

  • Latest News--Chancellor Motley and other university administrators and health officials will be joined by health experts to present a comprehensive view of the current H1N1 flu situation and the many steps that the university has taken to promote the health and well-being of its community and to safeguard continuity of campus operations.
  • Medical Experts--Medical experts presenting at the summit include Geiger-Gibson Health Center Medical Director Meenakshi B. Kumar, MD, and Boston University Director of Student Health Services David R. McBride, MD, along with UMass Boston University Health Services Executive Director Kathleen Golden McAndrew and Boston University Medical School Assistant Professor, Alysia L. Green, MD.
  • Campus Efforts--The summit also will include presentations by Human Resources Director Mark Preble and Associate Provost Kristine Alster on continuity planning and a presentation by Facilities Management Deputy Director Denise Duggan, who will outline steps that the Facilities Management Department has taking to keep the UMass Boston campus clean.

Please plan to attend all or part of the Flu Summit and remember that our University Health Services is connected with the latest pertinent flu-related information, which is available on their web site: umb.edu/flu.  The most important things to remember are: Wash your hands frequently and cover your cough with a tissue, preferably coughing into the sleeve of your elbow; get a seasonal flu vaccine; and stay home when you are sick.  The university has installed hand-sanitizing stations at key locations across the campus and provided anti-bacterial wipes for the sanitizing of shared computers and telephones. We have also intensified cleaning in an effort to prevent the spread of flu and planned four flu clinics offering the seasonal flu vaccine. UMass Boston

Seasonal Flu Clinics:

  • Sept. 21, 2009          4:00 PM – 7:00 PM              Clark Athletic Center
  • Sept. 29, 2009          8:00 AM – 1:00 PM               Campus Center Upper Level
  • Sept. 30, 2009          11:00 AM – 4:00 PM             Campus Center Upper Level
  • Oct. 1, 2009               1:00 PM – 7:00 PM               Campus Center Upper Level

Please remember that those who are sick should stay home, not come to campus, and should contact their healthcare provider immediately. For employees, we have developed an information sheet for those who have questions about sick-time allotments, and we are conducting contingency planning to ensure the university remains fully operational in the event of a high number of absences.

We hope you will join us in our efforts to create and maintain a healthy campus.
