About Continuing Education Courses

Some UMass Boston courses are offered both through the University's Colleges and through the Division of Corporate, Continuing & Distance Education (CCDE), a self-supporting component of the University. Continuing Education course costs differ somewhat from those shown in this chart, and CCDE courses are charged separately.

Description of Fees

The Board of Higher Education and the University Board of Trustees determine all charges.

Application Fee

Each application for admission to the University from a student seeking a degree must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee payment of $40 for qualified Massachusetts residents, $60 for non-residents. For complete information on qualifications for Massachusetts residency, see Residency Status. Checks should be made payable to The University of Massachusetts Boston, and submitted together with completed application forms.

Tuition (In-State Rate)

As a state institution, the University of Massachusetts Boston offers a low rate of tuition to all students entering from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Eligibility for admission under the low residential rate is determined according to a policy established by the Board of Trustees and detailed under the residency status section.

Non-state-supported courses

Due to budget reductions the campus is now offering many sections of courses through the Division of Corporate, Continuing & Distance Education. The fee for these courses are equivalent to what is charged a state funded course, but appear on the bill as a separate line item charge.

Combined Mandatory Fees

  • Student Activities Fee is used to support programs and activities beneficial to students, such as recognized student organizations and the University Cultural Events Committee.
  • Health Service Fee supports the University Health Service and its programs.
  • Athletics Fee supports the University Athletics Program.
  • Technology Fee supports additional student technology requirements beyond the level of support currently maintained by the campus.
  • Campus Center Fee supports the debt service for the campus' first new building in over two decades, and the focal point for student-related activities and services, including the new one-stop Academic Service Center.

Educational Operations Fee

  • The Educational Operations Fee provides funds for the goods and services needed to run a university.  Employed students seeking employer reimbursement for this fee can obtain from the Bursar's Office or in person at the One Stop Student Center a "support letter" describing the need for the fee and how the proceeds are used much as tuition would be at a private institution.

The Registrar's Service Fee ($100.00) is a prepayment for the copying of transcripts or any other official record. These fees are one time only charges for each certificate and degree seeking student in the first semester of the applicable program.
  • Identification Fee is used to support the cost of making identification cards (with photographs); all continuing students are charged this fee each fall, and all new or re-entering students are charged the fee before the first semester of attendance.
  • International Student Fee is a flat fee charged each semester to all international students holding visas.
  • Medical Insurance is mandatory for all students, unless they can prove separate coverage and receive a waiver from the Bursar's Office. The Medical Insurance waiver must be filed each academic year. Details please see "Health Insurance" below.

  • Registration Fee is charged to non-degree students each semester.
  • Please note: Non-degree students are not required to pay the orientation, recreation, and registrar's service fees. Each must, however, pay a registration fee of $50.00 and a $10.00 transcript fee during each semester of registration as a non-degree student.

Program Fee and Lab Fees

Each degree-seeking graduate student is required to maintain continuous registration until the degree that the student is seeking has been formally awarded. If a graduate student does not register for course, thesis, or dissertation credits during any semester, the student must pay a program fee to maintain continuous registration. The program fee for all students is $175.00 per semester and is paid to the One Stop Student Center. Note: Payment of the program fee does not extend the time limit for completion of the degree. Any questions regarding the Program Fee should go through the One Stop Student Center.

Tuition Surcharge for Credit Hours in Excess of Degree Requirements

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education requires all universities and state colleges to assess a tuition surcharge to students who exceed 118 percent of required credits in an academic degree program. This surcharge applies to in-state undergraduates and students enrolled through the New England Regional Exchange Program and is equal to the non-resident tuition rate per credit.

  1. Students who transferred to UMass Boston are exempt.
  2. Transfer credits completed after enrolling at UMass Boston are excluded from the total of credits earned.
  3. Credits earned for programs requiring more than 120 credits are excluded. For further information, contact the Registrar's Office at 617-287-6200 or registrar@umb.edu.

Cost of Attendance

A budget for the cost of study at UMass Boston may be compared to any general budget, such as a household or personal budget. Within that budget, a number of factors may change due to rising labor costs, changes in the costs of goods and services, and other influences.

When individual applications for financial aid are considered, the University uses a sample institutional budget estimating the average cost of attendance. Copies of this sample budget are available from Financial Aid Services.
